The American Culture

A few days ago, and I am not sure how the subject got started, I was talking with my mother about the American Culture. This discussion was started because we were talking about what a rich culture latin american people had. There are many customs and rich traditions that these people daily celebrate. When I was living in Buenos Aires, my Argentine "mother" Susana, who is among the older generation of Portenos (people from Buenos Aires) that are not as open to change and Americanization of Argentina. At first I thought is was rude, but when thinking more how the USA tries to globalize and change other cultures is sad. Without rich culture countries began to lose their history and livelihood.

I guess the real question arose, when I refered to the United States culture as "globalization" or lack of culture. When speaking of the US we refer to it as a "melting pot" of culture. When all these cultures were theoretically pured in this metaphoric melting pot did they end up negating eachother out, or was it a creation of a new culture...the American Culture? Some might say well American culture is baseball and fried chicken. Fair enough, but many cultures within the United States are sub-cultures. For instance the South is far different than the East, which is completely different then the West, which is far more different than the Midwest. All sub-cultures that are within the United States.

Is it also the case that the culture that the United States is slowly destructing itself? For instance, the US Constitution was largely based to be under the supreme authority of "God" and even during the Salem Witch Trials, the harsh puritan law, etc. were all due to punishment that these people deemed fit because of their faith in God. Now, because of the vast difference in people in the USA, the "under God" culture is lost. We did away with Christmas because we didn't want to offend certain religious groups, we almost did away with taking out "under God" in our pledge of alligence, which is crazy because it is apart of the American culture that is slowly disapearing. Here is the thing, I am not a crazy Christian advocate, just a thinker who comes up with these sort of rants while driving. Anyway, prehaps the American culture of bias towards other religions and judemental puritans are disapearing and we are forming a new, culture rich, and accepting group of people. Just a thought...
